Hollywood professionals in town to teach participants from Autism Oklahoma about filmmaking

OKLAHOMA CITY —

Hollywood professionals are in town teaching participants from Autism Oklahoma about filmmaking.

The film industry in Oklahoma is promoting inclusivity and helping dreams become a reality.

"Since I was like 13, I've always loved making videos and editing and making music videos, so I thought I wanted to go and pursue my interest and my passion of filmmaking," said Alex Weddington, a participant with Autism Oklahoma.

Weddington said filmmaking is his passion.

"We've learned about video cameras, lenses. Also sound is big," Weddington said.

When Autism Oklahoma, Oklahoma City Community College and the Film Education Institute of Oklahoma partnered to teach more about filmmaking, he jumped at the opportunity.

"It's a dream come true because I love filmmaking and get to use some nice expensive cameras and stuff. They have a great film program," Weddington said.

Others, like Weddington, have the same opportunity to have hands-on experience with those who have years of Hollywood experience.

"We're letting them direct and light, and they're gonna operate the camera. Gonna let them experience what it's like to be on an active film set," said Austin Taylor, executive director at the Film Education Institute of Oklahoma.

They want everyone to have a role.

"I think that's my favorite part about my life working in film is knowing how inclusive it is, that you don't need to have a big fancy degree, you don't need a lengthy work history," Taylor said.

So, what happens when the next major motion picture comes to the Sooner State?

"These participants, these kids, can talk to the heads of their departments and be like you know you're working on that show. I'm looking for the work, so hopefully, this relationship starts that sort of working relationship," Taylor said.
